How to prepare an animal for a remote session

A gentle preparation checklist that keeps an animal’s routine, consent signals and veterinary care central.

The short answer

Keep preparation simple: preserve the animal’s normal routine, provide a familiar resting place, share a current photograph and tell me about relevant context. The animal does not need to stay still or perform. Their comfort and signals determine the pace.

  • Keep the animal’s familiar routine unchanged
  • Let the animal choose where to rest and move
  • Continue every veterinary recommendation

Before the session

Choose a time that does not interrupt feeding, medication, exercise or rest. Send a recent, clear photograph and a concise note about the animal, their routine and the reason for contact.

  • Keep water and a familiar resting place available
  • Avoid introducing new stimuli just for the session
  • Continue all veterinary advice and prescribed treatment

During and after

Let the animal choose where to be and how to move. There is no required reaction. Observe without testing them, then return to the ordinary rhythm of the day.

  • Do not restrain the animal for the session
  • Note changes without forcing an interpretation
  • Contact a veterinarian whenever health or behaviour causes concern

Questions around this topic

Does an animal need to stay still during a remote session?

No. An animal can rest, move, eat or choose another place. Their ordinary routine and freedom of movement should be preserved.
